How to build a snail farm in your own back garden!

Building a farm for the snails in your garden is a great way of supporting local wildlife. It’s easy, oodles of fun for the family and gets the kids outside on a sunny day!1005206_85948944

You will need:

  • A clear plastic bottle
  • Scissors
  • Clear tape
  • Damp soil
  • Lettuce or weeds

The first thing you will need to do is rinse out the bottle and screw the lid back on. You then need to carefully cut a 10cm long and 5cm wide hole in the side of the plastic bottle. This can be quite difficult, and scissors are very dangerous, so let an adult do this bit!

You now have your snail house!

Next lay the bottle on its side with the gap is at the top, put some damp soil inside the hole you cut in the bottle (about ¾ full) and then place some lettuce or weeds in the bottle on top of the soil. Bury the bottle on its side (about half way up) to make it easier for the snails to climb up to the tasty lettuce.

Over the next few days you will notice lots of snails coming to snack on the food you’ve left out for them. Be sure to keep your farm nice and topped up with lettuce and weeds or the snails might get hungry and start eating your plants!
